Hergé's Adventures of... Momus?

Sometimes, adventuring through exotic lands, I feel like Tintin. Sometimes I even dress like him. And sometimes, out of the blue, people send me mock Tintin covers doctored to feature me. This one is courtesy of Staffan Millqvist.

Actually, when I'm cussing through my megaphone at the Whitney, I feel a lot more like Captain Haddock, whose splendidly baroque litany of insults, curses and racial epithets can be found here.

The curses of Captain Haddock always brings me a chuckle when I read the old comic books of Tintin. But in the beginning Tintin adventured alone in Soviet.

ooh, the other day in short corduroys and an orange 1970s shirt i thought myself to resemble one Indiana Jones....but I find Tintin a much more worthy fashion prototype. Have you been to the Tintin/Petit Prince/Babar store in the L.E.S? quite nice. i bought a stuffed sheep like that drawn in Le Petit Prince.
you're looking lovely. i'm looking like a Japanese school boy. at least my backpack gives that impression:

[i should tell you about the film i have in the works ;)]

Now I feel like reading Tintin, which I've never read before in my life. It will be a good experience I think. I also need something new to read after reading "The Ambient Century" by Mark Prendergast.

Some favorite selections from Samuel Johnson:

Trubtail! Airling! Pickleherring! Laced Mutton! Grammaticaster! Whoremonger! Ronion! Pickthank! Smellfeast! Cotquean! Runnion! Witling! Hell-Kite! Hedge-born Garlickeater! Jobbernowl! Fopdoodle! Pettifogger! Whoreson!

That Whitney pic is ripe for a funny caption. I'm enjoying the blousy plus-fours with the snug jacket. Works nicely.

If you have a free night next week, let me know—I have to come into town soon.

Bald-headed Budgerigar!

That's definitely one of my favorites of the Captain's curses. Actually, any of them that have to do with birds are good. Also, the photo portrait of you standing outside a chinatown produce-seller showcases the very clean sidewalk! Not at all like Bush or Stockton streets in San Francisco's chinatown. Are all the sidewalks that clean in Manhattan's chinatown, or is it just in front of that particular storefront?

Signed,

Someone interested in sidewalks

Winslow

You know, the source of Captain Haddock's creative blasphemies is the need to evoke ultimate obscenity while remaining pure and printable. You have this nautical man who clearly swears... well, like a nautical man. But he's in a book for children. So you make his swearing so outlandish that it sounds both outrageously dirty and totally clean. These days you'd probably just have him say "Fucking fuckers!" or "Fucking hell, fuck it, you fucking cunts!"

And while we're on Ugandan affairs, it might be the moment to mention the obscene parodies of Tintin created by Jan Bucquoy.

You don't even want to know what Bucquoy has him do to Snowy... I remember I was at a party in Aberdeen once, and someone started passing a Bucquoy Tintin book around the room, and each person in turn collapsed into paroxysms on the floor. And I was thinking "It can't be that funny! I won't laugh, whatever it is!" But it was, and I fell onto the floor in turn.

If those were just 2/3s of a foot longer you'd look more like the Little Prince.

I'm telling you, you could be a double, or stuntman, for times when the diva Tintin is out on opium.

Stephen Duffy did all this back in the eighties of course. You'll be dueting with Sandii next.
