Flaking

Bad day to wear short sleeves to work, as my sunburn is totally peeling off today. I am sending a lot of my body out into the world! Take my skin!

KOINH

The local Albertson's has one of those automatic Seattle's Best coffee stands. Not feeling like dealing with overly-perky (::snerk::) baristas this morning, I dropped in to get myself a mechanical cuppa.

Damn thing won't take my card. Swipe-swipe-swipe. Nada.

Fine. I feed it a fiver. It starts spitting out coffee and change. "Great," I think, "a pocket full of jingly for my troubles." But it stops after only a few coins. Bwuh? I look at the change drawer and find a bunch of Sacagawea dollars.

I didn't think we made those anymore. But even more bizarre, one of them isn't a Sacagawea, it's a golden Jefferson dollar.

I've never seen or heard of such a thing, but when I get to the office I Google it, and, sure enough, subsequent to the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 (we really need to start finding things to keep our legislators busy, folks) the US mint is releasing commemorative dollars of every president in some long-range plan that stretches out past 2016, by which point I would have hoped we'd have completely eliminated coinage, if not paper currency as well.

So I guess I'm keeping these as collectors' items. Dollar coins have always been nigh impossible to find a use for, anyway. Vending machines don't take them and clerks usually spend minutes looking them over like you're trying to pass Canadian money or something. "Susan B. Anthony? Is this an American coin? I don't think these are legal for use. They're just for collecting."

Current Mood: awake

A WORM'S-EYE VIEW OF A MAY APPLE FOREST

Forest floor at the Tyler Arboretum, last week. Largest, most robust stand of May Apple I've ever seen. And they were in bloom!

Being three inches tall under their canopy must be like walking through the office of Wright's Johnson Wax building--except not really:

Nutter alert!

This one's for anyone who like maps *and* laughing at right-wing lunatics.

A racist, Arab and Muslim-baiting blog calling itself Gates Of Vienna (a reference to the attempted invasions of Europe carried out by the Ottoman Empire in 1529 and 1683) posted a map of what "Eurabia" (seriously, these people use language like that) might look like later this century.

The map was reposted here, and some of the comments are brilliant.

"SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, HOW ARE THE MUSLIMS GOING TO TAKE OVER ICELAND?"
"I think America will be called al-Bundy."
"Oh, Switzerland, won’t you EVER just pick a side?!"

As an aside, note the (probably at least semi-serious) place names, including a number of puns based around the Arabic prefix "al-" (although they managed to miss out al-Bania). This is one of the very few jokes the neocon-blogger crowd have, and they kick the arse out of it something rotten. I cringe whenever I see The Guardian newspaper referred to as "al-Grauniad", although that's less to do with the prefix and more to do with them keeping that ancient Barry-Cryer-when-he-still-had-brown-hair-era gag about its high rate of typos (something of an urban myth in itself).

Also, when colouring the map in green (see, they know green is the Islamic colour - they're dead clever, these neocons) they couldn't even be arsed to rub out national boundaries, suggesting that the Islamic Caliphate of Northern Ireland (al-Ster?) will remain separate from the other 26 counties. "Are you a Catholic Muslim Fundamentalist or a Protestant Muslim Fundamentalist?".

Suddenly Libertarians don't seem quite so bad.

La la la I love my liberal life!

I rang my son last night to wish him luck in his GCSE Drama practical exam today. He informed me that he's 'dragging up' as Lady Dodo, 'in a specially made dress'! he's not the slightest bit abashed by this and in fact seems to be very excited about it. When he was younger one of his babysitters was an amateur drag queen, and my son used to love sitting watching me do his makeup. In fact, I seem to get called upon every time one of our male friends is going out in drag. I'm not sure I ever imagined my son en femme - I think I'm a bit miffed that i won't get to see it first hand and also that he never thought to ask to borrow one of my dresses.

He asked me what 'pomosexual' meant the other day, and we had a good chat about that. Then he asked me if I'd made the word up. I had to tell him that yes, I really had thought I'd coined the term, until I realised that Carol Queen and Lawrence Schimel had beaten me to it. Bah.

Anyway, he's promised to send me photos, and if I ask him nicely I'm sure he'll let me share!

If you vote Tory then you're voting for homophobic scum

Because you're voting for people that believe that lesbians shouldn't be allowed IVF.

And no, there is no excuse.

Edit: Actual quote from the debate
It is in the interests of every child to have a mother and a father, but if no father is present—as is, unhappily, the case for many children today—a male role model should be available. For that reason, I, personally, do not regard the substitution of "supportive parenting" for "father" as sufficient. The reference to the need for a father, which has not been reflected in the code, should be re-cast in the legislation as "the need for supportive parenting and a father or a male role model."

Edit 2: As has been pointed out, they are, in fact, misogynist scum, not homophobic.  Sorry about that.

A Suggestion

So, theoretically, and at least like three weeks into the future because for that time I am working myself silly trying to finish my degree, how do people like the idea of a superhero marathon? I've got the first two seasons of The Batman animated series which is awesome, and I'm getting the other two seasons plus the Bruce Timm-animated, Darwyn Cooke-written Justice League: The New Frontier movie, and we've got the good Spiderman and X-Men movies, and Superman Returns, yada yada you know the drill. Also we've got X-Men Legends for the GameCube, the four-player co-op on that is a lot of fun.

Sound like a good idea to anyone?

Don't Blink

Stephen Moffat won a BAFTA Craft award for writing Blink. Hooray. I'm pretty sure he'll get the Hugo for it, too.

*waits for this year's Moffat two-parter with bated breath*

(If any non Doctor Who fans are reading this, the episode Blink is well worth checking out anyway. Pretty much perfect.)

Also, finally got around to sorting out photos from last weekend - here's some photos from London.

Highlights )

I am currently "subtitling" the Proms, which means "listening to Tchaikovsky". Yay.

(Edit: note to self: "cadenza" and "credenza" are different, and if you mix them up on BBC Four, people will laugh and point.)

Cryptic, by Enigmatist : 23 (?)/23.

Went to London, having a l-o-n-g walk in the heat from Victoria to the V&A (annoyingly, being advised at first to go in the opposite direction to that which I needed, which set me back about forty minutes), where I met Charlie just after midday - to go around the (free) artists' books exhibition Blood On Paper (http://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/future_exhibs/blood_on_paper/index.html). We also looked at a cabinet of netsuke objects Charlie wanted to see.
I bought a few books :
- Jonathan Monk : Cover Version
- Certain Trees - The Constructed Book, Poem And Object 1964 - 2006
- Erica Van Horn : Gumigas Zimogs - A World Guide To Rubber Stamps
and a couple of packs of Supremes badges, one to go in Jeanette's birthday package : unfortunately the Supremes stage costumes show doesn't open until next week. Ian Ordeal is a huge Supremes fan and has issued several minuscule-pressing albums of unreleased tracks by the various members - I'm sure he'd love that exhibition. Charlie wasn't in the least bit amused by the bowls and drinks coasters made out of old Motown albums, thought it sacrilegious or something. Also picked up a Louis Wain cat postcard, and one the same to send to Jo. Spotted a nice book on North Korean poster art, but it can wait until I'm back in Brighton.
Walked with Charlie through the park to Portobello Road, stopping to rest in the shade of a tree where I produced my bottle of the iced mint tea I made last night. We filled up our water bottles, and went for a look at a caged-for-protection carved tree Charlie pointed out.
Waited in Oxfam's opened-that-day fashion branch whilst C.
