As a french-canadian, I think our local movies are doing really good against Hollywood's hegemony. However, it is often at the expense of content and/or "real" independent movie making (financing being focused on commercially successful movies), and most people think it's a bubble waiting to burst like in Japan. Nonetheless, the TV here seems to hold up pretty well and local production is as popular as ever, even if the networks often airs clones of american hits.

jimineuropa, to answer your question, yes it does seem to have a positive impact on local culture, even if on principle I usually hate free speech restrictions, when you witness the market taking over the cultural landscape there is no other way to counter that tendency. On the music side, the french speaking bands from Montreal do not get enough airplay IMHO (worldwide) compared to their english counterparts, but that can be compared to book publishing I guess.
