Nothing is as useless to the future as an age trying to be "timeless" and "classic", an age that has lost its nerve and its verve. Topicality and inventiveness are the things that last -- positive statements capable of revival at some future date, evocations that evoke something specific.

Well said.

I agree with this totally.

As for your list, I'd argue with including YouTube-- their quality is horrible-- the MySpace of video sites. Try Stage6 and Veoh. They're also waaaay less restrictive on content.

But YouTube is so ubiquitous as to make the others (as yet?) irrelevant, no? I hadn't even heard of Stage6 until you mentioned it. I don't doubt that YouTube could be unseated, but it's currently the brand name for online video.

And isn't it sort of a cultural pattern that the most mainstream/successful iteration of something is the most content-restrictive? Not that this fact makes YouTube a better site, but arguing against its restrictiveness sort of implicitly reinforces its preeminence.
