yes I got a bit stuck on

'People are all so stupid looking. Fulham's Labour base becomes clear'

The new town's prejudices become clear. You can see that that's an unpleasant thing to think/write/publish, can't you?

Yes, I was a bit shocked to read that. I'm not quite sure what I meant -- I was a Labour supporter, and certainly couldn't have been implying that people who voted Labour were stupid. Maybe there'd been some recent story involving a by-election in Fulham or something?

Anyway it's a bit mystifying, but I left it in.

It could refer to this:

1986: The Fulham by-election
Following the death of Conservative MP Martin Stevens, the by-election battle was in Fulham in West London. Tony Blair wasn't even a member of the Shadow Cabinet then. But the discerning eye might have spotted the first glimmers of New Labour.

(Labour held the Fulham seat for less than a year, losing it to the Tories in 1987.)

And the implication of both of those things could be: Fulham is the kind of place where people live who are basically conservative in their outlook, though they may on occasion vote Labour.

Glad you clarified that point. I was about to ask you, at what point did you swing from rather misantrophic Tory to Marxist romantic...:)
If the past is another country, then, to a degree, the diaries of the past reveal an oddly familiar stranger.
