The New York Times review of Summer Vacation 1999 makes a point as relevant to the transition between Hippopotamomus and Voyager as to Kaneko's transition from porn to the chastity of this film:

"It comes as no surprise to learn that all of the earlier films by Shusuke Kaneko, the young Japanese director of ''Summer Vacation: 1999,'' have been soft-core porn. Only a man utterly exhausted by the second-rate pleasures of grunting-and-groaning simulated sex could make a film as chastely, madly romantic as ''Summer Vacation: 1999."

Post-grunt romanticism is what I'm really hinting at in Cibachrome Blue when I sing "catch the fruit as it falls for me, hang it on the tree again" -- a fresh start, a break from decadence. "For I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now," as Bob put it. But the world is old, and possibly beginning, or possibly ending (for "he who is not busy being born..." etc).

The movie does sound interesting. Too bad I am only able to track down a VHS copy of it!

My version is a 2-disc Chinatown VCD, pretty ropey picture and sound quality, probably illegal.

I guess fact-checking was much harder before the internet!
