critical faculties

You're noticeably much easier on yourself than you are on poor Fairport Convention etc.

Re: critical faculties

Well, obviously I make the kind of music I want to hear.

If you want more negatives, though, I'll say that I really dislike some of the drum loops on this record -- they sound like the kind of thing that plays on BBC Radio 7 between the programmes -- and some of the digital synth sounds are super-naffo. On the other hand, my focus on sampling Warp percussion makes other loops fresher than they could have been, and the use of the Casio CZ101 is rather nice (most of the sounds on Rhetoric are from the CZ101, they're self-made patches played like great curving, trembly lines).

Generally speaking, I don't like Timelord. I never, ever listen to it. It sounds like the work of a man about to burn up on re-entry. In a way, it's a miracle that I survived -- that this loser turned into a winner, getting the girl, scoring hits (albeit in the parallel universe of Japan), living happily ever after.

If I'd been the type to do drugs, this would definitely have been the moment I started shooting heroin. In fact, I was very focused and organised, and set about getting Shazna back from Bangladesh and marrying her. Instead of becoming the decade in which I burned out, the 90s became my most successful decade. At the end of it, I moved to New York. I think hardship brings out my inner hardiness. But I don't like hardship, and I don't like listening to this record, so deeply steeped in it.

Re: critical faculties

I'd add that Shyness, my 1993 album with The Poison Girlfriend, strikes me today as a better album than Timelord, or certainly a more enjoyable one. There are songs of mine on it -- Heidi, Multiple Choice, It's Impossible, The End of History, Pure Selfishness -- which I think are better than the Timelord songs.

If I can find them, maybe I'll do a little podcast later today, because it's the other side of the Timelord coin.
