Why is it absurd? Just because some cases of mental illnesses are being misdiagnosed (i.e., ordinary rambunctious kids are diagnosed with ADD) doesn't mean that mental illness could be underdiagnosed in other cases, such as people who don't go to get treatment because of stigma or whatever reason.

Also, just because antidepressants are overprescribed doesn't necessarily mean that depression is overdiagnosed, just that the best treatment (if one is needed) isn't being given.

I'm not claiming that it is under- or overdiagnosed, just that it's very difficult to determine the general amount of mental illness when lots of people still don't try to get treated for it.
