I would go a step further and say that I think of him only as an intriguing persona, and not as a musician I can relate to at all (which is not to say that I doubt the assessment of others that he possessed some kind of great talent.)

Actually I do have a distant memory of really liking 'We Are The World' when it first came out (the day after my 6th birthday), but since then I've never had the experience of understanding the appeal of any of his music on any level.

Yet I feel somehow very intrigued by and sympathetic to him. The essay above covers that better than anything else I could say about him.

Not technically, not creatively. Jackson was a lovely dancer, but had a limited range and frittered away his talent by never really developing past a few great show-stopping moves.

I say this more in sadness than in anger, yadayada...
