If you use gmail's pop3 service in conjunction with Apple's Mail application you never see an ad. Period.

The text-only ads are pretty unobtrusive. I think it’s entirely possible for someone to never notice they exist, especially if you have trained your internal ad-blocker on the heavier advertising of the internets. I know these adverts either are a waste of money on me, or are working their magic subconsciously, because I never consciously notice them.
