I might disagree that it is necessarily neurosis or mental illness to centralize one's self-concept on one's role in production/consumption; rather i think it's like a kind of post-historical paganism. a practical, subliminal religion, with mysteries that don't reveal themselves as anything but abstract, natural, profane forces that compel us, like rain or fertility would be to "primitives." marxism as a political system exemplifies how powerful capital as a religious force is in that, as a supposed alternative to capitalism, it merely increases reverence for the human role in the process of serving as a metabolism for economics. aesceticism as far as this goes is a naive solution, but i think becoming some kind of monk or hermit or diogenes-type could be actual alternatives, although on an individual level moreso than a viable alternative for culture as a whole. i think the solution will be when technology makes human labor and all forms of economy we can imagine now obsolete and we have no choice but to reconsider what it means to be alive.
