can't believe you didn't include it, actually

That one annoys me even more than the original! And it uses "gay" as a pejorative, like the Safety Dance one. And the singing is out of tune. And it isn't by the originator of the form, Neato. In the world of parody, as in the world of pop, the wrong things get the big attention, it seems.

Stsanders's video shreds take this further to make an entirely new song to follow the video, to sometimes absurd, sometimes adolescent and inveriably hilarious effect:

That Rolling Stones vid on his site is actually brilliant. The lip-synch is perfectly plausible, and the track sounds like Captain Beefheart.

At a certain point, these parodies basically start to become the way we songwriters often work: a lot of my songs are a kind of intentional misunderstanding of existing songs, or a kind of ventriloquism of internalised idols.

Well, you can't have your internet and dissect it too. The word "gay" as a pejorative is as much a part of Youtube as the actual underlying code.
And I get zero mileage out of "unoriginal" or "out of tune". The video is sillier and therefore easier to make fun of, therefore funnier, therefore less gay.

Total Eclipse of the Heart

"That one annoys me even more than the original!"

That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. No argument here. But...

"And it uses "gay" as a pejorative, like the Safety Dance one."

...no, you're wrong. In the "Total Eclipse" video, "gay" means "homosexual", and is not disparaging toward gays. "The gayest man on earth would call this over the top" means that despite the abundance of half-naked men, the most homosexual person would, in this case, feel overwhelmed by the scenario. No "pejorative" whatsoever.

"And the singing is out of tune."

I can hear where she goes flat, but overall, she did well enough. I think the tone of her voice is what divides people more than lack of pitch.

"And it isn't by the originator of the form, Neato."

And your point is...? The Stones didn't originate Rock & Roll, but that's no reason to ignore their work, either. You're really going to dismiss a piece for not being made by the originator of its genre? Good luck enjoying the majority of art in all forms.

"In the world of parody, as in the world of pop, the wrong things get the big attention, it seems."

Actually, DustoMcNeato has gotten plenty of "big attention", and is the sole person to receive national interview coverage for the meme. In fact, when dascottjr's "Total Eclipse" video became a Top Ten viral video of 2009, TIME interviewed Dustin, not dascottjr, about it. In essence, both people have received positive attention and reviews, due to the quality and consistency of their work in the genre. What's so "wrong" with that?
