And I can't help feeling that if you seriously think living in a flimsy slum thirty floors up where you can make dinner and sit on the toilet at the same time is a jolly clever dodge and an exemplary use of space, then you're playing woefully to type as the niggardly puritan Scot.

Combatting consumerist excess hardly means living in conditions that a tenement-dwelling immigrant in 19th century New York would have turned his nose up at. If people shouldn't always get what they want, nor should one push solutions that would have them running a mile.

You're on the terrace, with a beer. You have electricity, so the beer is cool. You have no rent or mortgage, so you don't have to work too hard, you can just chill up here in the breeze. You live in a tropical zone, so the weather's never cold. You've put a plant on your roof to add a touch of green. The bustle of the city is nearby -- opportunities to work and to meet people -- but it's not on top of you. Your main concern is that this house you built yourself -- you're rather proud of it, actually -- will get redeveloped one day. You hope that happens later than sooner. Sip your beer!
